Short review of IP security camera Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW

If you`re looking for easy to set and use camera with good resolution and audio, then Hikvision`s DS-2CD2432F-IW may be the camera for you.

Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW will provide great quality at its Full HD (3MP). The camera has built in Wi-Fi module, microphone AND speaker as well as PIR motion detector. To all that we should add the IR illuminator.

Main Features

·         1/3” 3 Megapixel CMOS sensor

·         H.264 dual-stream encoding

·         Internal Microphone & Speaker

·         MicroSD card slot for up to 64GB internal recording

·         4mm fixed focal lens (79° viewing angle)

·         2.8mm & 6mm optional

·         Powered by PoE or 12V

·         3D Digital Noise Reduction

·         Digital Wide Dynamic Range & Backlight Compensation

One of the best features in Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW is the PIR motion detector. That means that the camera detects the heat signature and that makes it very accurate when it comes to motion detection. This, for sure, is the better option compared to the normal video motion detection where the changes in the pixel are analyzed which is the main reason for shadows or moving plat to trigger an alarm.

Another option worth mentioning is the IR cut filter and IR LED that make this camera day/night security camera. IR LED provides almost invisible lighting and can be used more discretely.

To all that we can add the ability of this security camera to record on microSD card both in loop mode or motion detect mode and all playback capabilities that one could expect from a good NVR solution.

Now about the mounting – the camera comes with a stand , as you can see on the picture, which can be removed. With the stand removed you can use the screws and attach to a ceilling, wall ect.

Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW offers Wi-Fi connectivity but in our opinion – if the hardwire is an option for you, then use it. As any other Wi-Fi device the further  Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW is from the router, the lower the frame rate gets at its max resolution (3MP). Of course this does not affect the quality of the recording but you must be prepared to experience some connectivity problems.

Under the Network menu under Advanced Configuration, you can set the IP address for the wired lan and the WiFi in the “Select NIC” drop down menu. You set the IP address of each as you wish. The camera must first be connected  via Ethernet to configure as is common with many WiFi cameras. You can use the included SADP program to find the camera initially and set the IP address to something suitable for your home network.

All the Wi-Fi options can be found at Wi-Fi tab. There is a button for quick search. Using it will force the camera to scan all available wireless networks in range and you can choose the one to connect.

Under Basic configuration -> System you can set the time, date or use NTP time server to sync the camera with your time zone.

Under Advanced Configuration -> Video/Audio you can set video resolution, audio, frame rate, compression and such. The Audio tab shows your options for the microphone and encoding choices. Most important is the volume.

Advanced Configuration -> Image is where you can adjust the image constrast, brightness and so on. Indoors, if you have some high contrast, like a bright window area, you have two choices. If the window overwhelms the image and makes it seem dark, consider using the Backlight Settings where you can use backlight compensation (BLC) or wide dynamic range (WDR) to adjust the picture to your liking.

At Advanced Configuration -> Events you can set how you want the camera to record. You can choose between Video Detection, PIR motion detection and other alarm options. To use the PIR motion detector that is built-in, you need to go to the “Other Alarm”, check Enable PIR Alarm, check Trigger Channel and set a schedule and click the Save button. This is a far better way of doing motion detection than the method above. Where you would want Video Detection is if the camera is facing out a window as PIR won’t work though glass.

In conclusion we can say that Hikvision DS-2CD2432F-IW is a good choice for security camera that will be placed indoors. You can easily mount it using the stand or without it (on a wall for example). The quality compared to the price is excellent. It has built in microphone and speaker, the menu is easy which makes the setup of the camera easy for anyone with minimal technical knowledge.

I was only able to get the PIR to record in conjunction with "Motion Detection". I initially tried to set it up PIR only. I never did get it to work. Only after many hours with trial and error did I discover you need to have motion detection turned on and then select storage schedule with "Motion & Alarm" for recording. The results are almost ZERO false alarms. FWIW I am using Hikvision IVMS-4200 as the PCNVR. In addition, the setting up part is done on the web interface directly in the camera. Then select "Storage Server" in IVMS-4200 for storing the videos. YMMV
